Justification for Jeremy Jotting

I suppose there is no other way to start a blog than to write about why I’m starting a blog. So why am I starting a blog? To be honest, I’m not sure either.

People can often tell if they are writers or not. There are people who like to write, and there are people who don’t like to write. (Although I get the feeling that people don’t like to write simply because writing was required in school.) As for me, I can’t say right now that I love to write, but it was something that I used to do when I was younger. If I used to write before, then I must have liked it and I’m trying to gain that appreciation back. Perhaps writing is much like a sport. How can I enjoy playing football if I don’t play football? And so now, I’m writing.

Be warned: five years as a civil engineering undergraduate student in a college where Taglish is the main language has not helped me develop my writing skills at all. I’m only banking on my decent to above average standing in English writing back in high school – a time when I did not even own a smartphone yet.

I will not deny that another factor in my attempt to blog is the hundreds of articles from news-alike sites like BuzzFeed, and more legit-ish news sites like Huffington Post and Business Insider (basically those shared on Facebook) saying that writing is healthy and leads to success. Do I believe it’s true? Possibly. Either way, it won’t hurt to try.

It occurred to me now that I don’t know how long a typical blog post should be. I know this isn’t school so there technically is no number, but still. 296 words now.

Ultimately, the tipping point in my decision to start writing a blog was in my acquisition of a domain name. (jeremykho.com just in case you didn’t get the memo.) It was cheap ($1/year) and I wanted a cool e-mail address. Currently, you may e-mail me at message@jeremykho.com, but some pending ideas include howler@jeremykho.com (if you’re mad), owl@jeremykho.com (if you’re a HP fan), raven@jeremykho.com (if you’re a GoT fan), ch@jeremykho.com (if you get the lame joke), and holler@jeremykho.com (if you’ve got the street cred). Feel free to send in more suggestions, I can have up to 100 addresses. 100!

I can’t think of a good blog name right now, and so I settled for Jeremy Jotting. Please give me suggestions. I have considered “We Build This City” as a blog name, but it fits more as a special segment of my blog. (More on that in the future.)

For this and for future posts, feel free to join in the conversation. Maybe writing really is good for us, and more of us can start our own blogs. (If interested, here is a guide to making a website, and there is a sale in GoDaddy for domains.)

Notes:

  • The last time I blogged was in the now defunct Multiply site, so patience.
  • Design had much lower standards back then too, so I apologize for my current site. Patience.
  • Anyone can read my blog, but it’s perfectly fine if no one does.
  • I’m a serious person and will probably have a more serious writing style in future posts.
  • Security might be an issue (that I might forget), so please alert me if I do stupid things.

Special thanks to Marquis Tan who helped me set up the site and provided my hosting.
